Oceans 13
Oceans 13
One symptom of a struggling movie franchise is the loss of big actors. And after a poorly received second installment, it’s no surprise to see several big names missing from Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Thirteen cast. Out go Zeta-Jones and Julia Roberts and in come Pacino and, erm, Izzard. There’s no two ways about it - Ocean’s 13 is a sausage-fest. But a thoroughly decent one. The plot is fairly simple, remedying the major ailment of its brain-twisting predecessor. Willy Bank, aside from having an awesomely amusing name, is the biggest name in Vegas when it comes to hotels. Having screwed over original Ocean’s Eleven member Rueben, Bank incurs the vengeful wrath of Danny Ocean and his sharp-suited chums. Cue 90 minutes of sneaky trickery as the gang devise elaborate plans to rip off Bank’s casino and bankrupt him on the opening night. Disappointingly, there’s little in the way of conflict. Despite flashes of brilliance from Pacino, he never really mounts any opposition to Ocean’s scheme, making the all-important heist far too easy for Danny and the lads and tragically wasting Pacino’s baddie potential. Fantastically shot, with some genuinely funny moments, this is solid entertainment that just fails to replicate the brilliance of the first, and best, in the trilogy. Best bit: When the enormity of Ocean's scheme dawns on Pacino's devastated Bank.Your Comments
